Outline of iEXPO 2007

NEC’s activities targeting the ubiquitous society, gaining momentum through NGN

NGN (Next Generation Network) is gaining attention, and is expected to speed up the full-scale arrival of the ubiquitous society. Preparing for the arrival of this ubiquitous society, NEC is making determined efforts to expand its Solution Businesses, that include application fields involving services that are based on the convergence of IT and networks. At this event, we will introduce NEC’s overall vision for the ubiquitous society, as well as specific activities and service platforms that users have come to expect from the NEC Group.

Ubiquitous Society Zone

Retail Outlets, Facilities, etc.

NGN will give rise to new services through a wide range of notable technologies and functions.
In this zone, we will introduce services that have never been seen before, including financial settlements, digital signage solution, nextgeneration retail outlet services, services incorporating presence information, collaborations between companies and industries, and remote medical care.

Social Infrastructures

NGN is expected to play an increasingly important role in public situations, including government services, disaster prevention, and crime prevention. In this zone, we will introduce systems that will support that role, including disaster prevention monitoring systems,
service systems for municipalities and government agencies, along with other social infrastructures such as “high-definition video transmissions”, “Internet satellites”, and “BIGLOBE”.

Ubiquitous Life Zone

Ubiquitous society has the potential to dramatically change our lifestyles. The NEC group will contribute to those changes by providing a wide range of products and services for households and individuals. For example, NEC will propose new ubiquitous lifestyles based on original new personal solution technologies for the era of NGN, including “remote screen technologies” and “multi-record cast technologies.”

Platform Technologies / R&D Zone

NEC is conducting research and development targeting automatic translation, to enable people to converse easily between Japanese and English; advanced security measures to prevent information leaks; network technologies to accurately detect failure locations; and a variety of other service systems using NGN. This Zone will also feature exhibits of semiconductors, batteries, and other devices along with cutting-edge technologies used in supercomputers and satellites. Enjoy a firsthand look at the comprehensive capabilities of the NEC Group.

Industryspecific Solution Zone

This Zone is divided into three sections: “Manufacturing Industry,” “Distribution Industry,” and “Contact Centers.” Here, we will introduce a number of industry-specific solutions including: Solutions for increasing the efficiency of backbone operations using SOA applications based on development platforms and packages comprised of SAP and other products; “DCMSTORE,” a total solution for headquarter outlets operated by volume retailers, using an ultrahigh-speed memory database as the platform; and solutions for Contact Centers using advanced voice recognition technologies and thin client applications.

Small and Mediumsized Enterprise Solution Zone

Managers of small and medium-sized enterprise must deal with a wide range of issues, such as maintenance of secure, highspeed,
high-capacity networks, compliance management, including compliance with the Japanese SOX Act, and strengthened risk management. In this Zone, we will introduce solutions designed especially for these enterprises, including the “EXPLANNER Series” of ERP Solutions for medium-sized enterprises in a variety of industries, network solutions such as IP telephony, and the latest business PCs and office servers.

IT/Network Platform Zone

IT Platforms

Enterprise systems must meet a variety of requirements, including flexibility, robustness, and operability. NEC offers products and solutions that incorporate a wide range of technologies, to create secure, flexible, easy-to-use IT platforms. Among the products on display in this zone are the NX7700i Series enterprise server; the SIGMABLADE Blade system; the Express5800 IA server; iStorage products; virtualized platform products; and the WebSAM middleware product that achieves system integration operation and management.
We will also present demonstrations of services related to these products.

Communication Platforms

With the growing shift toward broadband and mobile communications,
today’s businesses must be able to respond more dynamically than ever before. In this zone, we will present solutions using network products, wireless LAN, and dual mobile terminals, and introduce the concept of “unified communications,” which enables a wide range of terminals and media to be used depending on the circumstances to ensure optimum communications, and which also supports tie-ins with business applications.

Ubiquitous Workplace Zone

In this Zone, we will introduce solutions that are representative of NEC’s “UNIVERGE ubiquitous workplace.” Here, you will find exhibits of solutions that will revitalize the workplace, including systems for remote Board of Directors meetings that offer intuitive operability and highly realistic person-to-person communications; security systems that guarantee safety when using PCs outside of the office; and functions that enable users to access in-house systems remotely via mobile phone, in order to use groupware, make applications, or receive approvals as part of work processes.

Thin Client Zone

In this Zone, we will introduce specific application scenarios for NEC’s three types of thin-client systems. Here, you will find displays showing the “Virtual PC Center (virtual PC type)”, which generates different PC environments for each user so that all users can continue working from their own desktops regardless of the terminal; “Ardence (Net Boot type),” which is suitable for 3-D CAD systems; and “Citrix Presentation Server (screen transfer type),” which could be considered as a de facto standard for thin-client systems.

Security Zone

In this Zone, we will introduce “Coordinated Security,” a new concept for responding dynamically to increasingly complex threats to information assets.
“Coordinated security” increases security levels while ensuring effective use of existing investments. It also reduces operating costs, enabling investments in essential core operations. We will also introduce systems that contribute to safe,
secure social environments, and new technologies that help to achieve greater security.

Internal Control Zone

NEC provides total support for customers in strengthening internal controls, in the form of consulting, software, and system development. In this Zone, you will find “Internal Control Structure Support Software” that ensures total support from the construction of internal controls to operation and evaluations, as well as “IT General-purpose Control Support Software,” “Application change management,” “Authentication/access management,” and other processes that are particularly important in the context of IT generalpurpose controls. Demonstrations will also be provided.

Environmental Solution / Risk Management Solution Zone

As global environmental problems become increasingly serious, companies are required to implement environmental management that is in conformance with business strategies. In this Zone, we will present a lineup of services and solutions that includes management of environmental information such as greenhouse gas emission volumes; solutions targeting “REACH” and other regulations on chemical substances in products; “Automatic PC power management systems” for research and development targeting global warming countermeasures; and product recycling management services. At the same time, this Zone will offer displays of risk management solutions to deal with fires or power outages occurring as a result of accidents or natural disasters.

RFID / FeliCa Zone

In the “RFID” Zone, we will introduce application scenarios in a variety of industry types, including the manufacturing and distribution industries. In the “FeliCa” Zone, we will present “Mobile Wallet Services” and “Multi-service Reader/Writers,” which can be adapted to multiple electronic money payment services to meet a wide range of needs, and introduce ways in which these services can be applied to gathering and leading customers, as well as to marketing activities. We will also introduce various systems using new sensing technologies (visible light communications, face recognition, etc.).

Information Management and Application / Web2.0 Zone

NEC provides products and services that make information “visible” within a company, and which support the effective use of that information, in the form of “Real-time Information Application Solutions.” In this Zone, we will introduce “Information Management Solutions,” which support the construction of information management platforms for achieving integrated management, sharing, and use of information throughout entire companies, thereby acting as a foundation for these “Real-time Information Application Solutions.” We will also offer exhibits of products and services that propose new marketing, in-house communication, and work approaches using technologies, concepts, and phenomena referred to as “Web2.0,” which has gained considerable attention in recent years.

SI Development Environment / SOA Zone

In this Zone, we will introduce effective ways of using existing assets through flexible, high-speed collaborations and SOA based on “WebOTX,” NEC’s highly reliable, high-added value service execution platform. Demonstrations will also be provided.
Other exhibits in this Zone will include “System Director Enterprise,” a software development environment that increases the efficiency of open backbone system development and maintenance, and “Process Director,” a corporate project management system.
