This year marks the 30th year of “C&C,” as advocated by NEC.
In addition to its advanced technological capabilities, NEC has an extensive track record, going back many years, in the construction of systems in IT and network fields. Opening Speech | 9:30-9:55

The 30th Anniversary of the C&C Declaration

This year marks the 30th year since former NEC President Koji Kobayashi put forward the concept of “C&C,” which represents the “convergence of communication and computer technologies,” in 1977. Since then, NEC has continued its efforts to make the concept of C&C a reality, by increasing the level of computer technologies and communication technologies, as well as the technologies that integrate these two. The NEC C&C Foundation was established in 1985.
I am honored to be able to make the opening comments at this 30th Anniversary Symposium.

Ubiquitous Technologies as a Platform for Innovations

With the recent evolution in computers and network technologies, there has been a growing interest worldwide in the ability of these networks to automatically identify current conditions, and to offer increased convenience in people’s lifestyles and in society in general. We can find many computers in our surrounding environment, and these computers work together to offer convenience in a variety of ways. This is the embodiment of “Ubiquitous Computing,” which I have been advocating for some time. Ubiquitous Computing has gained broad acceptance as an infrastructure for a wide range of applications, and has come to be used in various fields. In this presentation, I will discuss some of the ideas at the root of ubiquitous technologies, which will form the foundations for innovations in society, and offer some suggestions on how these innovations can be achieved.

Panel Discussion | 10:40-12:20

In this Panel Discussion, the Panelists will present their image of the society that we can expect to see over the coming 10 to 30 years, in the midst of globalization, environmental issues, the declining birthrate combined with the growing proportion of elderly people, and the advancement of ubiquitous technologies. They will examine the innovations that will be brought about through C&C, and the directions that C&C technologies are most likely to take. Discussions will also cover such topics as “what is required to promote the further development of C&C,” and the ideal form of coexistence between the people and systems that offer optimum structures, which create new value within the overall framework of humans, society, and information with excitements and surprises.

Corporate management in an era of “flattening” organizations

As the curtain opens on the 21st Century and we enter the era of globalization 3.0, the world is becoming increasingly flat and network-based, and we are seeing an era in which individuals are the leaders of change. As a result, however,
an increasing number of managers and corporate executives are finding it difficult to determine how the world will change, and to identify the role that their companies will come to play in the future. I will offer my personal views, from the perspective of management at Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd., on the values, actions, and theories that companies should adopt in order to succeed in a harsh competitive environment, while fulfilling corporate social responsibilities in an increasingly flat and open world.
